Velvet for the Party Season: What to Wear and How
Evening skirts in satin and sequins are already moving as the Christmas party season approaches. Velvet is the fabric to build the rest of the wardrobe around, and one dress can carry you from winter weddings to Christmas Eve.
Why velvet, and why now
The evening rail is shifting. Shoppers are already reaching for satin midi skirts and sequin midi skirts as Christmas party season approaches from late November, and the next fabric to arrive is velvet. It makes sense: velvet holds colour deeply, flatters by candlelight and reads as dressed without any effort at all. Buy one good piece now and it will work for winter weddings, office parties, Christmas Eve and the dinners in between.
The piece to build around is the Honorine Velvet V-Neck Midi Dress. The midi length keeps it useful for almost any invitation, and the V neckline gives you somewhere to put jewellery and a reason to keep everything else quiet. It is made for evenings, occasions and the dinners worth dressing for, which is exactly the brief for the weeks ahead.
Think of velvet as your evening tailoring. You would not buy a new coat for every cold snap, and you do not need a new dress for every party. One velvet midi, worn three or four ways, is the more considered purchase and the better dressed one.
How to wear the Honorine dress
Start with the neckline. A V neck wants a fine chain or a single pendant rather than a statement piece, so the line stays clean. If you prefer bare skin, leave it; if the room is cold, a slim roll-neck underneath turns the dress into something you can wear to a long lunch as well as a party.
For dinner, add heels and keep the rest simple. A heel in black, burgundy or a metallic tone lengthens the midi and stops it looking flat. Carry a small bag you can hold in one hand rather than a shoulder strap, which breaks the line of the dress.
For a party where you will be standing, the same dress works with a knee-high boot instead of a heel, and a long coat over the top rather than a short jacket. The midi hem and a long coat sit well together because the proportions stay vertical. If you want to soften the look, add a fine knit draped over the shoulders rather than a cardigan.
Fit matters more in velvet than in most fabrics because it shows every pull. The dress comes in sizes S to XXL, and each product page lists its options before you add to the bag. If it does not fit, return it free within 30 days and order the right size.
Dress codes, from winter weddings to Christmas Eve
A winter wedding is the easiest place to wear velvet. The Honorine dress is formal enough for a church or a hotel, and velvet photographs well in low light. Add a heel, a fine chain and a long coat, and you are done.
For a Christmas party, the question is how much shine the room expects. If it is a seated dinner, keep velvet as the texture and let jewellery do the catching of candlelight. If it is a standing party with music, you can afford more: a velvet dress with a satin or sequin piece alongside it, or a feather-trimmed skirt such as the Eléonore High-Waist Midi Skirt for the person who wants the entrance to be the point.
Christmas Eve tends to be the most dressed night of the season. The Diane Velvet Maxi Dress is the romantic answer: black velvet, a high neck and roses across the skirt, with the bodice quiet and the hem doing the talking. Wear it to the dinner, the gathering and the late service, and let it be the one piece you do not have to think about.
If you are building a small evening wardrobe rather than buying one dress, add a satin piece for variety. The Fanny Satin Midi Slip Dress gives you liquid satin and a long ribbon at the throat, which is a different mood from velvet and works for the same invitations. Between the two, most of the season is covered.
Colour, jewellery and the finishing pieces
Velvet loves deep colour. Burgundy, chocolate and forest green are already in the wardrobe this autumn, and they carry into evening without looking seasonal. Black velvet is the most useful and the most forgiving; if you already own black, choose a deep colour for the second piece so the two do not compete.
Jewellery should catch candlelight rather than shout. Our pieces are stainless steel finished in gold or silver tone, so they are easy to wear and easy to care for: store them apart and wipe with a soft dry cloth. A fine chain, a small hoop and a ring are enough with a V neckline.
Shoes and bags should support the dress, not argue with it. A knee-high boot in suede or leather is the most useful purchase for the weeks ahead because it works with midi skirts, tailoring and the velvet dress alike. Keep the bag small and the coat long.
If you want one more evening option for a different kind of night, the Camille Satin Stand-Collar Ruffle Mini Dress is polished at the neck and playful at the knee, which suits a younger dress code or a party where you will be dancing. It is a different silhouette from the Honorine, so the two do not overlap.
Care, fit and buying fewer, better pieces
Velvet is more robust than it looks but it does not like heat or pressure. Hang the dress rather than folding it, keep it away from a hot radiator and steam it lightly rather than ironing it flat, which crushes the pile. Brush the nap gently in one direction if it looks tired.
Buy for the invitations you actually have. If the season holds a wedding, a work party and Christmas Eve, one velvet midi and one satin piece will cover all three with different shoes and jewellery. That is the point of buying fewer, better pieces: they repeat well because they are good.
Sizing is listed on each product page before you add to the bag, including clothing in letter sizes and shoes in EU sizes. If something is not right, returns are free within 30 days of delivery for items in their original condition with tags attached, and there are no exchanges, so return for a refund and order the size or colour you need.
